Government Sponsored Scholarships in Canada for International Students

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship

Value: $50,000 per year.

Duration: 3 years (non-renewable).

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution along with a predetermined number of applications. Candidates should only seek a nomination from the institution at which they want to study. The Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program, in 2008 to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students. Close to 166 scholarships are awarded yearly from a pack of 500 scholarships, which can be activated at any time.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship

Value: $70,000 per year (taxable)

Duration: 2 years (non-renewable)

Canada Graduate Scholarship Masters Program

Value: $17,500

Duration; 12 months, non-renewable

University-Specific Scholarships in Canada for International Students

University of Montreal International Student Scholarship

Value:  Up to $19,339 per year

Duration: Duration of study

International undergraduate, postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students are awarded a number of scholarships every year after their enrolment in a degree program at the University of Montreal in Canada. The aim of the program is to help the best talent from around the world attend one of the finest francophone research universities in the world. Starting in the fall of 2020, they could benefit from an exemption from the tuition fees normally charged to international students.

Carleton University Award for International Students

Value: Up to $8,000.

Duration: 1 year for Graduate students and 4 years for undergraduate students.

A one-year domestic entrance admission scholarship may be given to newly admitted international undergraduate and graduate students Canadian citizens, permanent residents, landed immigrants.  Admission to Carleton’s graduate programs is competitive.

Western University International President Entrance Scholarship

Value: $50,000

As part of the national scholarship program, three scholarships worth $50,000 each are available to exceptional international students. Selection is based on outstanding academic performance, creative and innovative thought and significant achievement in extracurricular activities. University Of Waterloo Hira & Kamal Ahuja International Scholarships

Valued: $20,000

International students admitted with an admission average of 90% or above will be considered. Selection will be based on academic achievement combined with any other faculty-specific entrance scholarship criteria. An application is not required.

University of British Columbia MasterCard Foundation Scholarships

Value: Full-funding

This scholarship opens annually for international students of the sub-Saharan African region to study at the University of British Columbia, proudly sponsored by MasterCard Foundation. The Program provides access to education for academically talented students, yet economically marginalized young people. It is highly competitive.

Carleton University Entrance Scholarships

Value: 20,000

Duration: 4-year

A 3-year program that helps shape researchers into engaged leaders. This innovative model aims to help scholars to look beyond their areas of expertise and develop a desire to engage with people, issues, ideas, typically outside their academic training. To be admitted to Carleton means you have an average of 80 percent or better, plus you also need to meet the language requirements, if admitted you will automatically be considered for a renewable entrance scholarship.

York University International Entrance Scholarships

Value: Up to $35,000 per year

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding international applicants from secondary school (or equivalent) who present a minimum admission average and are applying to a direct entry undergraduate program. This scholarship can be renewable for an additional three years provided the recipient maintains full-time status.

University of Toronto Need-Based Grants for International Student

Value: Depends on student’s need

University of Toronto grants are intended to assist students with unmet need with respect to their educational expenses.  It is expected that prior to applying for this grant, students will have explored all sources of funding such as family support, savings summer and study period income, OSAP or other government assistance programs, daycare subsidies, and bank lines of credit as appropriate.

University of Toronto International Scholar Award

Value: $80,000 – $180,000 over four years.

Students whose dreams are to study in the world renowned university in Canada can take the International Scholar Award opportunity of the University of Toronto to make their dream come through. The University of Toronto International Scholar is a new award for international students admitted to the University of Toronto beginning 2020-21. The award is different from, and is not tenable with the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship.

University of British Columbia International Award

Value: Up to $3,200 per year

General Eligibility for Canada Scholarships

The eligibility criteria here apply to some or all of the scholarship programs listed above. To be eligible to apply, you should:

  • Be an International Student, Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
  • be enrolled, have applied for, or will apply for full-time admission to a graduate program at the masters or doctoral level at a Canadian institution.
  • Respect the internal deadline to apply for admission for your intended program of study.
  • Contact the faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at the selected Canadian institution(s). Advisably, between zero and 12 months of full-time studies (or full-time equivalent) in the program for which you are requesting funding.
  • Not have previously held a CGS M, have achieved a first-class average as determined by the host institution, in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent).
  • Submit a maximum of one scholarship application per academic year to either CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
