About the Scholarships (Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust):

The Scholarships were launched in 2009 in memory of leader and activist Dr Charlie Perkins – the first Aboriginal man to graduate from university. In 2009, with the assistance of the University of Oxford, the Charlie Perkins Trust established annual Charlie Perkins Scholarships to support two talented Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians each year to undertake postgraduate study at the University of Oxford from 2010. In 2011, with support from the Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust, the Scholarships also became available for study at the University of Cambridge.

General Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

To be able to apply and be qualified for the Australia Chevening Scholarships 2020/2021 (Through Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust), Applicants must:

• have tertiary qualifications
• be accepted into any graduate degree program offered at the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge (this will usually require a First Class Honours degree, upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent) or have an application under consideration at Oxford or Cambridge Admissions Office.
• be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
• identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
• be accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived. Applicants must provide a written statement confirming their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Scholarship Value and Benefits:

Australia Chevening Scholarships 2020/2021 – Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust will cover for up to three years full university and college fees, travel costs and an annual stipend to cover living expenses. For the 2019-20 academic year the stipend is £16,000 (approximately A$29,000).

Application Procedures for the Australia Chevening Scholarships 2020/2021 (Through Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust) – How-to-apply:

Interested applicants are required to take three (3) steps to completing the application process:

Step 1:     REGISTER THEIR INTEREST: Contact the Trust to discuss your application and college choice.

Step 2:     APPLY FOR UNIVERSITY: Before applying you should check your preferred university’s website – Oxford or Cambridge – to clarify exact entry requirements and application deadlines for your chosen course/s. The Trust encourages candidates to consider applying to both.When you apply to Oxford or Cambridge you will be required to nominate two of the listed participating colleges.

Step 3:     APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP: Once the application dates are live and you are accepted into any of the universities listed, then apply to the Trust for a Charlie Perkins Scholarship.

Document Requirements:

As part of your application, you will be required to submit the following documents to include: A Personal Statement , Curriculum Vitae (CV), An official transcript of university results, Confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent through a signed statement, A high resolution head shot and Five referees (three of which should be academic referees; the referees should forward written reports directly to [email protected].)
