British Council DestinationZero challenge 2021 (COP26 opportunities) for Young People

Application and entries are invited from young individuals across the globe (selected countries) willing to take part in the British Council DestinationZero challenge 2021 for cash award. #DestinationZero is an innovation challenge for people aged 18 to 35 who want to tackle climate change and make a positive difference to the world.

British Council looking for ideas that will help communities move closer to zero carbon emissions or adapt to the effects of climate change. Pitch your climate innovation to us by 14 February 2021. Win £5,000 funding and coaching to bring your idea to life.

British Council DestinationZero challenge 2021 | the Award

  • On 16 March 2021, the selection panel will announce 10 successful innovations.
  • If our selection panel choose your climate innovation, you will receive coaching support and a grant of £5,000 to help you bring your idea to life.

Who is Eligible?

  • We welcome applications from a diverse range of candidates.
  • You must be 18 to 35 when you apply, and be a resident of one of these eligible countries;
  • Eligible Countries: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Note: Participants must be living in their respective country at the time of applying and for the duration of this project.

Selection Criteria

On how the competition will be judged and winners selected; the British Council panel will choose ten innovations based on:

  • What problem are you trying to solve? (25 per cent of your score): We’re looking for a clear explanation of the climate change issue your innovation deals with and how this issue is relevant to your own community.
  • How will your innovation will affect climate change? (50 per cent of your score): We want to hear how your innovation will address the issues you have outlined. We particularly welcome innovations that have a positive effect on women and girls, people from marginalised communities, and other groups most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
  • How realistically have you budgeted for your innovation? (25 per cent of your score)

How to Join the Challenge

  • Share a 60 second video with the hashtag #DestinationZero on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or YouTube.
  • In the video, please say your first name, your age and where you are from, then pitch your climate innovation idea. Innovations could include new business models, new scientific innovations, community initiatives or climate warning systems.
  • On 28 February 2021, the selection panel will review the video submissions.
  • Then they will invite 20 participants to provide further information about their innovation idea.

Entry Deadline: The deadline is 14 February 2021 at 23.59 UK time.
