Applications are invited from young African innovators and entrepreneurs for the 11th NEF Africa Energy Innovation Challenge 2026. Organized by the Nigeria Energy Forum (NEF), the competition supports young people developing practical energy-related innovations using locally available resources.
The 2026 Africa Energy Innovation Challenge is themed “Accelerating Value Addition, Youth Innovation & Community Action.” It seeks innovative devices, equipment and digital solutions capable of addressing challenges across employment, agribusiness, waste-to-energy, local manufacturing, artificial intelligence, connectivity and energy management in Africa.

Program Overview
The 11th Africa Energy Innovation Challenge mobilises young, early-stage energy entrepreneurs from across Africa to develop, prototype and scale innovative solutions for some of the continent’s energy and development challenges.
Participants are encouraged to develop practical solutions using local resources while demonstrating their potential to generate employment, support entrepreneurship and contribute to sustainable economic development.
The competition also connects promising young innovators with business development opportunities, mentorship, industry experts and potential pathways for scaling their solutions.
Innovation Tracks
Proposals are invited under four innovation tracks:
- Track 1: Powering Youth Employment & Green Jobs
- Track 2: Energizing Agribusiness & Waste-2-Energy
- Track 3: Greening Local Manufacturing & Value Addition
- Track 4: Transforming AI & Connectivity
Applicants should select the track that most closely corresponds with the problem their proposed innovation seeks to address.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the 2026 Africa Energy Innovation Challenge must meet the following requirements:
- Be a young professional or entrepreneur from Africa aged 18 to 35 years.
- Apply as a team of at least three people.
- Ensure that the team reflects gender balance, including at least one woman and one man.
- Teams may comprise members from different schools, universities, institutions, companies or African countries.
- Develop an early-stage solution relevant to one of the four innovation tracks.
- Individuals or teams may submit multiple applications.
Proposal Requirements
The initial proposed prototype submission must not exceed one side of an A4 page.
The proposal should include:
- Project Title/Solution: Up to 250 words.
- Innovation Track and Expected Impact: Up to 50 words.
- Short Abstract: Up to 50 words.
- Design Tools and Method: Up to 50 words.
- Problem Statement: Up to 50 words.
- Estimated Costs and Timeline: Up to 50 words.
Applicants should follow the official Innovation Challenge submission template and remain within the specified word and page limits.
Evaluation Criteria
Initial proposals will be evaluated based on the following:
- Local Content: The extent to which the solution uses local resources and expertise and can create meaningful impact for people, households or businesses.
- Originality and Creativity: The ability of the proposal to introduce an original or creative solution in an underdeveloped area.
- Commercial Viability: The proposed prototype should be realistic, practical, cost-efficient and demonstrate a potential pathway towards implementation or commercialisation.
- Youth Employment: The proposal should demonstrate how the innovation can connect young people with quality employment or entrepreneurship opportunities.

Winners and selected participants in the 11th NEF Africa Energy Innovation Challenge will have opportunities to:
- Receive a share of cash prize grants of up to US$10,000 to demonstrate or scale their proposed solutions.
- Pitch their prototype solutions at the 2026 Nigeria Energy Forum using a poster and short video.
- Participate in networking opportunities with young professionals and senior decision-makers from government, international development organisations, academia and the private sector.
- Access business development workshops, industry mentorship and exhibitions valued at more than US$15,000.
- Receive support from a venture incubator.
- Gain exposure for their innovations through the Nigeria Energy Forum platform.
- Compete for additional recognition through the final-round and public voting process.
Up to 20 or more shortlisted entries may also receive complimentary access to participate in the 11th Nigeria Energy Forum.

How to Apply
Applications for the NEF Africa Energy Innovation Challenge 2026 are submitted online through the official Nigeria Energy Forum competition platform.
Interested applicants should:
- Form a team of at least three African innovators aged 18–35, ensuring that the team includes at least one woman and one man.
- Select one of the four innovation tracks and develop a practical prototype or solution relevant to that area.
- Download and follow the official Innovation Challenge Submission Template.
- Prepare the initial prototype proposal on one side of an A4 page, observing the specified word limits for each section.
- Complete the official online application form and provide the required project and team information.
- Submit the application and proposal by September 10, 2026.
- If shortlisted, prepare the additional final-round materials requested by NEF, including a one-page poster, detailed budget, two-page Design Brief and short video pitch.
Applicants should ensure that their submission follows the prescribed format, as proposals exceeding the specified page or word limits may not be considered.
