Eligibility Criteria | IBM PhD Fellowship Awards
To be considered for the IBM PhD Fellowship Awards Program:
- Candidates must be enrolled full-time in a PhD programme.
- Students should be within two years of their expected PhD graduation date at the time of nomination.
- Candidates must demonstrate strong academic and research achievement.
- The student’s research should align with areas of interest to IBM.
- Candidates must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member; students cannot nominate themselves.
- Faculty members must receive an invitation from IBM to submit a nomination.
- Candidates from countries subject to applicable U.S. embargoes or sanctions may be ineligible.
The IBM PhD Fellowship is open internationally, subject to IBM’s eligibility and country restrictions.
Fellowship Benefits
The value of the IBM PhD Fellowship varies according to the country where the recipient’s university is located.
Current award values are:
- United States: $40,000
- Other countries: Between $6,000 and $25,000, depending on the country
The fellowship award is provided for one academic year.
In addition to financial support, Fellows are paired with an IBM mentor and encouraged to participate in an IBM internship during the award period. However, an internship is not guaranteed and is not a requirement for receiving the fellowship.

Application Procedures
How to Apply: Students cannot apply directly for the IBM PhD Fellowship. The current nomination process is invitation-only:
- IBM invites eligible doctoral faculty members to participate in the nomination process.
- An invited faculty member identifies an outstanding PhD student whose research aligns with IBM’s areas of interest.
- The faculty member submits the student’s nomination through IBM’s Academic Awards system.
- IBM reviews nominations and selects successful Fellows based on academic achievement, research potential and alignment with IBM’s research interests.
PhD students interested in the programme may discuss their eligibility with their faculty adviser or doctoral supervisor, but only invited faculty members can submit nominations.

The nominating faculty member is required to provide information supporting the candidate’s nomination. This includes:
- The student’s CV.
- PhD programme and expected graduation information.
- A description of the student’s research.
- Faculty endorsement of the nominee.
- Information demonstrating the relevance of the student’s research to IBM.
- Other supporting information requested through IBM’s nomination portal.
