The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program (EP) is a three-year program which consists of two 18-month assignments. It is targeted at talented, recent PhD graduates who are excited by the opportunity to gain working experience and further develop their economics expertise, while making a direct and substantial contribution on a global scale to fostering monetary cooperation, facilitating international trade, securing financial stability, promoting high employment rate, sustaining economic growth, and minimizing poverty.

Eligibility Criteria | International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program 2025
To meet the eligibility criteria for International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program 2025, the candidates are expected to fulfil the following conditions:
- Have recently completed or are expected to complete a PhD within a year (or less) of joining in fields including macroeconomics, finance, public finance, monetary economics, international economics, trade, poverty issues, political economy, econometrics or related areas.
- Be a national of one our member countries.
- Be aged below 34 at entry to the IMF program.
- Possess an excellent academic record.
- Have validated analytical, quantitative, and IT skills.
- Show an interest in, and aptitude to work in an international organization, and contributing to economic policy issues.
- Have strong written and oral English skills.
Application Procedure
How-to-Apply: Interested applicants for International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program 2025 are to apply online via the IMF Career Site. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed between October and January, with offers made in early February.
Applicants should take note that the selection process consists of multiple stages, which may run in parallel to one another. They include the following four key stages:
- Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a 30-40-minute preliminary interview during which you will be asked for a high-level overview of your research paper and to respond to questions on economic topics related to the work of the IMF and on your interpersonal and communication skills.
- Following the preliminary interview, you may be asked to forward your most recent university transcript from your PhD program, provide three academic references and submit a research paper or one or two chapters of your dissertation.
- Successful candidates will be invited for an in-person panel interview, and will also be asked to take a 40-minute online psychometric assessment and a 90-minute written exam.
- Once the panel interviews have been completed, all candidates who reached the panel interview stage will be referred to an internal committee of senior staff for review and final selection will be reached. Then offers to successful applicants will be sent out.
