Call for Application: U.S. – Africa Tech Challenge 2021 for Innovative Technologies

U.S. – Africa Tech Challenge 2021: Applications are invited from technologists across Africa for the U.S. – Africa Tech Challenge. The challenge is for interested applicants to present their solution against disinformation and propaganda to an audience of government, civil society and private sector stakeholders.

The Tech challenge aims to advance the development of promising and innovative technologies against disinformation and propaganda across Africa. Up to three organizations will be selected as winners of the Challenge and will receive funding totalling $250,000 USD. Interested tech organizations across the African continent are encouraged to apply.

U.S. – Africa Tech Challenge 2021 | DETAILS

The purpose of the U.S. – Africa Tech Challenge is to advance the development of promising technologies that offer innovative solutions to help expose, understand, or counter propaganda and disinformation within Africa. The Tech challenge comprises two phases, the Phase I and Phase II.

Phase I of the Challenge provides an opportunity for organizations to submit an application on their technology to be reviewed by a panel of evaluators who will select up to eight participants. The eight selected participants will be invited to present their tool at a virtual technology demonstration in April 2021. Up to three participants will be chosen to receive an award between 50,000-250,000 USD.

Phase II of the Challenge will be held virtually on the margins of Informa’s East Africa Com on 11-12 May 2021. It will consist of virtual panel discussions and networking with technologists, governments, civil society, and media to share lessons learned and opportunities around countering disinformation. The eight participants from Phase I will all be invited to Phase II.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the U.S. – Africa Tech Challenge 2021:

  • Organizations wishing to apply for the tech challenge must be operated in Africa with at least a co-ownership status with an African.
  • Organizations must possess innovative responses or solutions to counter disinformation and propaganda in Africa.
  • Organizations must be domiciled and headquartered in Africa.

How-to-Apply: Interested applicants for the U.S. – Africa Tech Challenge are to apply for the Phase I Application should submit the required documents in PDF format via email to [email protected] before the application deadline.

  • Name of participant or organization
  • Address of participant or organization
  • Place of registration
  • Point of contact (full name, email address, phone number)
  • Complete answers to all of the questions in the “Requested Information” section below
  • Be no longer than eight pages total (excluding cover page).
